Nick's Story
My wife and I arrived in Bremen on November 4, 2003 and was met at the luggage claim by a staff member to transport us to our hotel (located next door to the hospital). During the next two days they took x-rays, blood tests, discography, etc.
My operation was November 7th at 7pm and only lasted one hour! I was told by a surgeon in the USA that a great surgeon was always faster than a mediocre surgeon. This same operation takes some surgeons up to 4 hours! I was greeted by Malte and Dr. Zechel right after surgery and was told that the outcome was excellent. My blood loss was only 1/4 of the loss from blood donation, making my recovery much easier.
I spent the next 5 days in the hospital getting exceptional attention at all times. I started walking (at first with the help of a walker) right from the first day. My wife left for home on the 12th to help with our family business.
After that I was taken to the Marriot Hotel in Bremen. I stayed there for the next week and walked at least 4 to five miles every day!
Terry Crane, from Phoenix, Arizona, had the surgery done the same day as me. We became good friends and the companionship really help during the two weeks of recovery. The only problem was we had a very similar sense of humor and almost busted a stitch a few times trying not to laugh!
I have been home for two days now and believe that the operation was a complete success!
Malte Petersen (Head of International Medical Department Bremen) was with me every step of the way. From the first e-mail communication up to my final post surgery exam. His communication skills combined with his medical knowledge proved to be invaluable.
I truly believe that I the best medical team in the world for this operation
